What an intriguing title and incredibly interesting story. The trials and tribulations of a young Native American on a reservation come to light in this book. The struggles of being smart in a community that does not necessarily appreciate intelligence, having alcholic parents, a "weird" sister, and witnessing death at an early age all make the narrator, Junior, a protagonist we root for. His intelligence, budding cartoonist skills, and basketball skills push him to enroll in the high school located 20 miles from his home. Junior struggles to get to school but finds friends and a home in his new school. Challenges arise as he balance the two worlds in which he now lives. |
