Even though I took the parent side on the book challenge, this novel is definitley one that should be in the media center in a middle/high school. First, the novel has an African-American male narrator which will reach a number of the minority students in the school. Secondly, it takes place during the Vietnam War, a time period which is not as well know by students and the narrative gives a unique perspective of the time period. The narrator, Richie Perry, is sent to Vietnam by mistake, "The only reason I was going anyway was because of a paperwork mess up. At first my unit was scheduled to go to Nam, but a doctor at Fort Devens had said that my knee was too bad for combat duty. I was assigned to a supply company while I waited for new orders. But then my old compay didn't go to Nam, they went to Germany instead -- which was cool because there wasn't any fighting going on over there -- and I got orders for Nam. Richie continues to relate his experiences from a first person point of view about what happens to someone in a war zone. A great read. |
