FICTION vs. NONFICTION
The two major categories, or genres, are fiction and nonfiction. Fiction is about things, events, and characters that are false – they’re not real, but made up in the author’s imagination. Nonfiction is about things, events, and people that are not false, but true or real – they’re based on facts. One way to remember this is to remember the question: “Is it fact or fiction?” because fact and fiction are opposites. So fiction is not based on facts. |
GENRES vs. SUBGENRES
Any book you pick up will belong to a major genre (either fiction or nonfiction), and it will also belong to a more specific subgenre. Look at the chart below. Just like an apple can be called a food in general, and more specifically a fruit; so Hunger Games can be called fiction in general, and more specifically dystopia (which is a special type of science fiction). Note: these subgenres are usually just referred to as “genres.” |
