Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan is the best thing since sliced rock cakes made by Hagrid. Think Robin Hood, Lord of the Rings, and King Arthur all mixed together. Set in the kingdom of Araluen, the main character, Will, is an orphan who wants nothing more than to be a great knight. When he is assigned to be one of the mysterious “rangers” instead, Will is more than disappointed. After all, rangers don’t get any glory – they’re mainly feared and believed to have magical powers. Do they really know magic? Do they truly have no sense of humor? (Note: I do apologize if you get addicted to this series, because even though they’re great as individual books, they are highly addicting, and could actually set you in the rut I’m trying to prevent.) |
