I love mysteries. Following clues, deciding which characters can or should be trusted, what hidden agendas does everyone had, and of course, finding out whodunnit. Kathryn Haines creates in Iris Anderson a teenaged slueth reminiscient of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. Iris is determined to find out what happened to her mother. Just before her father returned from Pearl Harbor as a wounded soldier, Iris' mother inexplicably takes her own life. Iris must leave her upper Manhattan school and neighborhood and move to the Lower East Side. The novel is rich in detail and language of the 1940s and falls into the genre of Historical Fiction as well. If you enjoyed Nancy Drew, Iris will be a female detective to read about. |
