Do you ever read something because it just looks like an easy, fun read? Well, that is why I chose to read The Mystery at Marlatt Manor. It is mystery candy for the preteen. It delivers exactly what you would imagine from the book cover---a spooky tale about 13 year old Mallory who rides her bike alone up to the scary mansion on stormy nights trying to solve a ghost mystery. The only thing missing from this novel was Shaggy, Scooby and the Mystery Van. Despite the cliched haunted house with evil, get-rich-quick developers stalking the mansion, this is really quite a good story for middle school readers. It offers three generations of strong female characters and endearing relationships between Mallory, her older brother, and an awkward male teen from her new school. Mallory deals with solving a mystery while coming to terms with her parents divorce and family relocation. In the end, this is a satisfying read with much to offer young adult readers. |
