Tracking Trash is another installment from the Scientists in the Field Series. An excellent science and Common Core standards tie-in nonfiction read. In fact, this particular book in the series was listed in School Library Journal's "20 Outstanding Nonfiction Books/Core Essentials" for 2013. Tracking Trash has garnered a myriad of honors including the Boston-Globe Horn Book Honor Book Award for nonfiction. This book along with others in the series uses captivating photography and follows real scientists as they study scientific phenomena. In this case, it is our trash---from lego pieces to hockey gloves, scientist Dr. Curt Ebbesmeyer follows it, collects data about it, and uses that data to protect and understand our oceans. This book is recommended for 6-9th grade or ages 12 on up, but could be used with younger or older students depending upon their reading abilities. |
